These 9 Simple Updates Will Make Your Home Feel Cozy
Looking to up the cozy factor in your home? I’ve got 9 simple updates you can make to turn your house into the haven you’ve been dreaming of.
Let’s get started!
Some of our organization faves
Number One: declutter
First thing’s first: Do a bit of decluttering. While you’ll want your home to show off your personality, there’s a fine line between looking lived-in and looking messy. In order to achieve the cozy home of your dreams, you’ll be adding in some luxe textures and warm colors, but before you bring anything new into your home, clear out the excess so you can begin with a clean slate.
Start small here. You don’t need to declutter your entire home in one go. Start with one space, whether it’s your living area or bedroom. Toss out old papers, bring donations to Goodwill, and move anything that doesn’t belong to its proper place. Use baskets, trays, or other stylish storage pieces to contain and organize your things in the space.
Number Two: Comfy furniture
When selecting (or replacing) furniture for any space, focus on both form and function. While you want your furniture to look good (we would never advocate for ugly furniture), you won’t have a cozy space if you don’t want to sink into your sofa on Saturday morning or crawl into your bed after a long day. Take the comfort of all of your furniture into account.
Don’t forget furniture your guests use, either. Sleep in your guest bed for a night and watch a movie from your extra living room chairs to make sure the cozy vibes extend to everyone visiting your home.
Do you already have super comfy furniture, but you’re not thrilled with how it looks in your space? Consider slipcovers for sofas or new plush comforters for beds. Small updates can go a long way in reviving your current pieces.
our favorite throw blankets
Number Three: Blankets & Throws
Ready to get really cozy? Toss in some blankets and throws. Not only will they offer you a comfy space to curl up, they’ll add to the layered look. (But more on that later.) Select a few for each space — you don’t want too many to where it seems cluttered, but you want enough so that everyone in the room can cuddle up in a throw of their own. Think like Goldilocks: Just the right amount.
Number Four: Drapery
Nothing is as stark and cold as a naked window. Now we’re not saying you need floor-length floral curtains — in fact, you probably don’t want to go that route — but consider curtains or even nice blinds for your windows. They’ll add some texture to the space while allowing for more privacy inside.
Number Five: Plants Or flowers (or both)
Add in some plants or flowers for a fresh touch in the space. The greenery will bring some life to the room, even if the plants are faux like mine. (I can’t help it that I wasn’t born with a green thumb!) Maybe you want to get creative here and use dried floral arrangements or even eucalyptus bundles. Go for it! The idea is to bring in some added dimension through unique textures and colors. But remember the decluttering you did before — don’t add in too much. Simple is better here.
our fave pillows, covers, and inserts
Number Six: Comfortable pillows
When it comes to your pillows, think comfort first. Good sleep is important, and you can always add a pretty pillowcase. Don’t forget the throw pillows here, either. Adding a few throughout your home will give your space the plush touch it needs to be the ultimate cozy zone.
Number Seven: Warm Tones
We have nothing against cool tones. We love blues and grays as much as the next person. However, adding in some neutral tans and creams or bright corals and yellows will compliment those cool colors nicely and add coziness to the space.
Number Eight: Layers
Think of cozy fall and winter fashion. What comes to mind? Probably something like layers of long-sleeved tees, sweaters, and jackets. The same thing goes for your home. To capture that cozy vibe, layer various textures and fabric weights together. A cashmere throw on a cotton sofa makes for the perfect combination. Or maybe you’d prefer to pair your cashmere throw with silky pillowcases. The idea is to use various materials to create a posh and comfortable space.
our favorite rugs
Number Nine: rugs
Finally, let’s chat about rugs. (No, we’re not talking about toupees.) Use larger area rugs to anchor a space so it doesn’t feel vast, cold, and impersonal. Use smaller rugs to emphasize zones in your space. The textures, colors, and patterns of your rugs will add to your layered look and take your floor from cold to cushioned.
Let your personality show through here, too! Don’t be afraid to try out fun patterns and bright colors. A home doesn’t need to be plain to be cozy.
